Testing For Grade 4 - February 27

Kahala Elementary School's 4th Grade has been randomly selected to complete The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessment. NAEP was first administered in 1969 and is the largest continuing and nationally representative assessment of what our nation’s students know and can do in subjects such as mathematics, reading, science, and writing. Standard administration practices are implemented to provide a common measure of student achievement. Teachers, principals, parents, policymakers, and researchers all use NAEP results to assess progress and develop ways to improve education in the United States. The results of NAEP are released as The Nation’s Report Card, and are available for the nation, states, and in some cases, urban districts on their website. NAEP is a congressionally mandated project administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), within the U.S. Department of Education and the Institute of Education Sciences (IES).

Keiki Carnival 2019!! January 25 - 2:00 PM - 5:30 PM

We are so excited about the upcoming Keiki Carnival and have been busy preparing to make it a memorable event. We have many exciting activities planned, from bounce houses and waterslides to a petting zoo and slime-making station. We will also have lots of delicious food vendors including Teapresso, Panda Express, Jersey Mikes, and Papa John's to name a few.
Packets were sent home with students in Friday folders last week. Suggested donation is $50 per family and proceeds to benefit the Kahal PTO and the American Heart Association Hawaii.
Please follow the link below to sign-up to volunteer for this event. This is our biggest and most popular event and we need each family to sign up for one one-hour volunteer time slot. This will ensure we have all the help we need and that everyone will have some time to enjoy the carnival with their families.

Teachers Participate in Science Professional Development

On Wednesdays, teachers convene from 2:00 - 4:00 to learn about the latest in curriculum, instruction, and assessment strategies. Recently, our teachers took part in a professional development session to learn more about Next Generation Science Standards using the 5E Model. They constructed a SUPER INSECT using a lesson from our science curriculum, StemScopes.

UNITY DAY - OCTOBER 24

Today, Kahala students, staff and The Hawaii State Department of Education (HIDOE) joined a national movement for inclusive, nurturing learning for all. October 24, 2018, is Unity Day so everyone was encouraged to wear orange to show we care about safe, supportive schools, and communities. Let’s show solidarity during National Bullying Prevention Month.

To support this positive movement, all students and staff received orange bracelets with the message Unite for KINDNESS, ACCEPTANCE, and ALOHA. In addition, students were encouraged to wear orange shirts today instead of their red Kahala shirts as we usually do on Wednesdays. Together we will show our unity for a safe, caring and supportive learning environment for all.
