Hawaii State Assessments

Beginning on Tuesday, May 1st through Friday, May 18th students in Grades 3-5 will take the Smarter Balanced English Language Arts/Literacy and Mathematics Assessment. We highly encourage your child to attend school especially during this time. The purpose of the assessments is to provide you and your child’s teacher(s) with information about the extent to which your child has met identified content standards in ELA/Literacy and Mathematics. The Department of Education strongly encourages all parents to have their children participate in the Smarter Balanced ELA/Literacy and Mathematics Assessments so that the schools can better identify their academic strengths and needs of the students. If you have any questions, please see Principal Gardner.

Lockdown Drill

Today, our school conducted a lockdown drill at 1:00 p.m. This drill helps us practice how quickly we can secure our buildings and account for all of our students and staff in case of an emergency. This was an unannounced drill to test how quickly we can shelter our students in the nearest secured room and communicate attendance to the office. Our campus was secured in less than a minute. We were able to account for each student and adult shortly after that. In real life, for example, we might go into lockdown if there were an intruder on campus.

We do several unannounced drills throughout the year to practice how to calmly mobilize our student body for various scenarios. We do monthly fire drills, an annual lockdown, a shelter-in- place drill (either in the classroom or in the cafeteria), and a mass evacuation drill. In the near future, we will be having a mass evacuation drill, where we relocate to another site. For our school, our off-site location is Kahala Community Park. By having these regular, unannounced drills, our children and staff know what to do should a real emergency arise.

This is a beautiful tree, so please spend a few minutes today sending it your love.
